Karda Adalta Vol I eBook Sherrill Nilson

This is a good fantasy with strong characters and an interesting plot. Unfortunately, the Kindle version contained format problems such as the occasional single "paragraph" with sentences from multiple people, making it difficult to know who was saying what. They properly deserved a separate paragraph for each. Also, some words were garbled or incomplete, forcing the reader to guess what was meant. These problems interfered with smooth reading.

I had some problems with the background. For example, there were hints that the Karda, an intelligent life form, were long lived and present long before the settlers arrived, but so what? In addition the geography and political geo-divisions were poorly explained. Also, what are the circles of discourse and what formed them?
The background for Marta, the protagonist, was thinly explained and unconvincing. Marta was supposedly an experienced secret agent placed on new worlds to ascertain all she could about the societies. but a number of times she did obviously stupid things and ended up nearly losing it all. Her developing talent was too little until the very end. Her primary antagonist was evil, but seemed much cleverer.
This story could easily have been so much better with more care for coherency.

Karda Adalta Vol I eBook Sherrill Nilson Reviews

Although the story line of Karda is pretty standard, (slighted son wants to wrest control of the kingdom from the heir) the book is redeemed by outstandingly imaginative characters and settings. I especially liked the Karda. The story flows well. We like the heroine and her love, and are willing to root for them. A small warning. The villain is really bad and the culminating scene is pretty violent.
Personally, I would like to know more of the feelings, personalities, motivations and history of the Karda. Therefore, I'll read the next one in hopes of learning these things.
This is an outstandingly satisfying fantasy series.
I LOVED this book!
The beautiful cover art completely intrigued me - along with the blurb on the back cover - and made me want to buy it - and go where I'd never gone before. It was my 1st experience with reading sci fic/fantasy, so it took me a while to suspend my earthly beliefs and just move along with the story.
The main character, Marta, was well-developed and likable from the start, and as the story progressed, the other primary characters made for an intriguing tale. The Karda were definitely fascinating major characters, too. All conspired to make me devour the book!
I have already recommended "Karda" to others. And I definitely look forward to the next Volume!
This is one of the best scifi/fantasy books I have read since The Dragon Riders of Pern. There are so many things about this book that I like. First off, the cover was spot on to what the author described and lured me in immediately. I was immediately immersed in the story and heroine. Secondly, it was a well-plotted adventure. Thirdly, it stayed with me after I finished the book. I did not want to leave the world the author created. I am off to get the second book.
In many respects, this reminded me of Anne McCaffrey's "Dragon Riders of Pern" series as well as containing elements from other science fiction stories. Some time in the future, colony ships were sent out from earth and colonies were created on many different planets. On the planet of the story, the human colonists have decided to make do with as little technology as possible. They have developed heightened psi abilities which takes the place of a lot of technology. There is a large intelligent predator, the Karda, which look like winged horses with the heads of eagles and talons instead of hoofs. Some people can form a telepathic bond with a Karda and then can ride the sky together. There is intrigue, betrayals, and a malevolent alien contained in the planet. There is plenty of action, and while certain elements of the story is predictable, I still found it enjoyable and hard to put down. If you enjoy the stories of Pern, you will probably also enjoy the stories of the Karda.
I thought yesterday, "When will I find a fantasy novel as lovely and lyrical as the series I've been reading?" Here it is KARDA is Volume 1 of Sherrill Nilson's amazingly expansive ADALTA series (I so anticipate the continuation of the series!). Adalta is a colonized planet of humans, in the far future of course, where sword and sorcery rule, not technology--never technology. Until Marta, a trade scout suffused with technological capability, arrives; and technology meets magic, with incredible results.

The psychology underpinnings of this novel are unbeatable. That made the novel for me as much as the magic.

I classify this series as sci fantasy, even though it is sci fi, because the planet Adalta is straight out wonderful fantasy no technology, everybody (except one) is born with Talent (magical ability), weapon of choice is swords, castle, dungeons, oubliettes, and warded entities. Yay! I adored this novel and am eager to read it again, and then continue the series.
This book has so many good qualities that I wanted to give it 5 stars, but could not due to the intense torture, blood and graphic evil that is also in the book. I am a senior and I don't need to have the evil character raping and torturing children to get the point across that he's evil. So, all the the great character building, world building and excellent relationship interplay that I really enjoyed was ruined for me by too much of the dark. I will not read any further in this series.
