Doc Sidhe Aaron Allston 9780671876623 Books Reviews
If you're looking for a 30's, noir-style romp, with all the creatures of the Fey thrown in, and worlds to be saved... this is it. I read Doc Savage many, many years ago, and this calls to mind so much of the same feel. I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading the next installment.
Stretching the boundaries of the term "Alternate History" in a sort of Thirty's pulp fiction - and Doc Savage in particular - way, is the book Doc Sidhe, by Aaron Allston.
The Elven (or "Fair") world is much like ours (the "Grim World"). In fact, it's history is a slightly twisted copy of ours, but "running" about sixty years behind (they're in the middle of a depression, had a major war fifteen years previous, and so on).
It's a fun book, and a nice homage to the Doc Savage series without being so much of a copy as to be a parody, or to be unable to stand on it's own.
Imagine if there was a counter earth, stuck in the 30s, where, basically, elves and trolls are real.
The coolest thing, however, is that Doc Savage is real, too. Except for the fact he is a Daoine Sidhe sorcerer, and has a higher mortality rate for his crew.
A down on his luck kickboxer and his girlfriend end up there, via a conjurer's circle, and a plot to change the magical rules of relations between the two worlds.
Oh, and the evil villain is Doc's son. This is an excellent homage, a good urban fantasy, and a bit of the Untouchables, to boot. As in, it don't end happily for everyone.
If you like the sound of that, easy to check out, it is a Baen Free Library book -
"Doc Sidhe" is a great example of fun reading. The characters are enjoyable, capable and the interaction between them is smooth. Allston's writing style does not jar, dislocate or disorient the reader, and the characters will stay with you. His main antagonist is delightfully wicked, and since your hero is only as good as your bad guy, this is important. Humorous and action-packed, this book is a MUST read for all fantasy fiends & fans. A great mix of fantasy and pulp fiction writing.
I read this pulp novel on the Baen Books site. It was inspired by Doc Savage and seems to be a superior modern version of the character. I hope that someone out there convinces the author to produce more of them. From start to finish I couldn't put this book down. I couldn't believe that there are still fans out there who like the old pulp fiction character of Doc Savage. He was created before Superman and Batman! It's prequel was just as good. I can't get over how the descriptions make this a world of art deco and 1930's and 40's film noir. If you like the Shadow, The Spider and Doc Savage, this book was an experience you'll never forget!
Harris Green has hit bottom. His career as a professional kickboxer has gone nowhere, his girlfriend Gwen has dumped him, and he is as drunk as he can be. He comes up with the bright idea of talking Gwen into taking him back and arrives at her apartment just in time to see her being kidnapped. Harris's kickboxing might not be good enough to make him rich but its plenty to take on a couple of low-budget hoods with his girl. What he doesn't expect is that the kidnapping would leave him in a portal between our own world and the fair world--a place where magic works but where good and evil still battle.
The grim world of common humanity and the fair world are tied together and sometimes share people and ideas. But someone is tampering with the ties in an attempt to gain control of both worlds. Only Doc Sidhe and his Sidhe Foundation stand in their way. Harris joins up with a reluctant Doc when he finds that Gwen is one of the keys. Through a series of adventures, the two males learn to appreciate one another--but can they survive the showdown with the masters of evil magic?
Author Aaron Allston delivers a well written and fast paced fantasy adventure. With using both Irish/British legend and modern technology, Allston's parallel world construction is convincing and interesting. Harris is a fully motivated character with both flaws and goals. Harris drives the plot forward as his experience in both grim and fair worlds teaches him to be a full man.
Our world is the Grim World, the alternate world is the Fair world (where once our fairy tales came from); in this Fair world magic still exist, as do non-humans. Doctor Desmond MeqqRee runs the Sidhe Foundations, and his friends call him Doc. He designs building and bridges, and fights crime with his aides. He is the Fair world’s Doc Savage; in this case he’s Doc Sidhe.
Harris Greene is a kick boxer, trained in tae kwon do. The night he loses his latest fight his manager drops him, then his girlfriend Gaby Donohue dumps him. He gets drunk and wants to make up with her; when he sees men abducting her, he follows and attacks the men giving Gaby time to escape, and then he finds himself in an alternate world.
Gab Donohue is gifted, and Duncan Blackletter wants to study her. He needs to take her to the Fair world to do that. But then Harris Greene and his new friend, Doc shows up to rescue her again, and she ends up in the Fair world where strangely she feels at home.
The author even gives credit to Lester Dent and Walter Gibson, two giants of the pulp universe from which he drew his characters for this book. The story was a lot of fun, with excitement on every page. Although maybe patterned after Doc Savage, Doc Sidhe was much different. He’s vulnerable, his people kill, and they die in battle; something Doc’s aides never did. But this new universe isn’t supposed to be a rip off of Doc Savage and his aides; these are great characters in their own right. But if you love the Doc Savage adventures, you’ll definitely like Doc Sidhe and his adventure in this fast-paced yarn. Highly recommended.
This book is a fun romp. And it really did remind me of a Buckaroo Bonzai tale.
