...this is a time machine! The mark of any good writer is the power to firmly take hold of the reader, and not let go until the very last word. Jerome Charyn has the power to do just that!
"I am Abraham" will literally transport you back in time; back in the period of the Civil War, and the life of Abraham Lincoln. You will experience Lincoln's life; celebrate his triumphs, as well as suffer his losses. You will hear Lincoln speak, as he narrates the events in his life.
Jerome Charyn is Lincoln. Reading this, I honestly believe that the actual spirit of Abraham Lincoln took possessionof Charyn, and through the author's hand, wrote his own personal, intimate autobiography.
You do not simply read "I am Abraham"; you experience it.

I Am Abraham A Novel of Lincoln and the Civil War Jerome Charyn Books Reviews
This book is by far the best i have read regarding the life and family of our 16th President. It takes you from his early years in Illinois, relationships, to his marriage to Mary, the White House, and Civil War. Not only does Mr. Charyn take you through events you may be familiar with but with the tragic loss of a second son and with his wife's bouts with depression. You also get a glimpse into his dealings with his remaining sons, Mary, and the Civil War. I would recommend this book highly.
I found the book very interesting. A page-turning read. I'm very familiar with Civil War history and found that the author adhered to the facts as I know them. He goes beyond the facts in imagining Lincoln as a person, not the marbleized creation on often encounters. Although the book is largely imaginative, it is plausible with respect to Lincoln's inner thoughts. The depiction of the Lincoln's servant Elizabeth Keckley led me to read a short memoir by her.
Okay, I know thinking about Lincoln having a sex life is like thinking about your grandparents' sex life. He did have four kids after all, they had to come from somewhere! This book is a fictional view of what Lincoln thought and why he did the things he did. We all know how the story of Lincoln ended, no spoiler there, so we know it's not a happy book, but it is an interesting book.
This account of Lincoln's life is arguably unique in being written in Lincoln's own voice. This brings numerous events to greater life than in other accounts. The only unfortunate omission is Lincoln's great addresses, especially Gettysburg and the 2nd Inaugural; the events in which they are given are well covered, but their actual crafting and the thinking process that went into them is not. In pace and momentum, the book is very well written; it never lags.
I really enjoyed this first-person account of Lincoln's adult life. I have read much about Lincoln, and can believe this was really his voice. I was disappointed that he skipped so much, especially an account of how be studied to become a lawyer. This novel brings Abraham Lincoln to life as a real man, not just the icon we are used to. He was even aware of how he had aged during his time in office, and the effects on his face. The book starts with his assassination and ends with his visit to Richmond, with his young son, Tad. This could have been reversed, to better effect. All in all, I was surprised by his sexuality, and doubt that he would ever have revealed such thoughts.
Any novel will only give a limited view of reality. Mr. Charyn's attempt to speak in Lincoln's voice; the voice of a man defined by the harsh conditions of his backwoods childhood was inspired. Especially with regards to how that same individual runs up against the sophistication of refined Eastern politicians. I wish that he'd been able to include a few more known scenes from Lincoln's life. Alas, the book would have to be a series if he had gone that far.
For instance, the first time Lincoln meets Stanton, and his determination to relearn the law after that early event would have been entertaining. Nonetheless, it was a good read I hope we see more efforts at hearing Lincoln in his own voice.
This is an unrecognizable Washington, DC. There is no resemblance to the pilgrimage we US students take by senior year in high school. Like Abraham Lincoln, Jerome Charyn is also a “prose poet” and has described a period of history that would have been surrealistic to modern people, at best. There is nothing more I can say. One needs to experience the story, so I will give you the author’s words and hope that you feel the powerful scenes, see the anguish of Lincoln, and decide to read and enjoy the entire book. Here are Lincoln’s thoughts while visiting Richmond after Jefferson Davis fled his “White House” and the city was burned “And they disappeared into their own dust storm, perfunctory and supernatural at the same time. I wanted to stick within their spell, to remain with these riders, whoever they were. But I didn’t have their sabers or their sass—I hadn’t rounded up stragglers and dumped them into a corner of Libby Hotel, hadn’t cleared all the slave pens, hadn’t charged up and down the hills of this hellhole like avenging angels, with three buglers riding the same horse. I was just a flimflammer from the North, with one boy at my side and another boy with Grant—husband, father, and President, worried about my wife."
