Autobiography of a Fat Bride True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood Laurie Notaro 9780375760921 Books

I read a number of reviews before reading this book and the majority of them agreed that Notaro was so funny you would literally laugh out loud, even in a public setting. Some of the stories were amusing, mainly the ones in the first part of the book before she gets married. However, if you're someone who looks to get lost in a book or needs a tiny bit of substance with your humor, skip this writer. What a lot of reviews fail to mention is that the compilation may be funny but some of the stories are so short you wonder if she's trying to just take up space to get to the end. Also, a few of the works seem out of order so you're re-introduced to an event that she mentioned 4 stories ago and it's a bit confusing. Plus, in the name of humor she's a huge fan of being overly wordy in order to force a sentence to be funny which of course makes it not funny. I didn't hate this book, but I didn't necessarily like it either. I found myself reading through the last half of the book quickly, basically just trying to finish it so I could move on to something else.

Autobiography of a Fat Bride True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood Laurie Notaro 9780375760921 Books Reviews

Laurie Notaro always delivers the laughs. I've never read one of her memoirs I didn't love. And unlike some of the idiot negative "reviews" here, I've actually read the book and not just looked at the cover. Ahem, you know who you are! Laurie is snarky, foul-mouthed, and hilarious.
As always humor where there usually isn’t any. Love this author.
I am (was) a big jen lancaster fan and read several reviews that said if I liked her earlier work, I would like Laurie Notaro. WRONG!

This was a painful read. There were a handful of good stories in there, but most of it was filler. And bad filler at that. A few paragraphs about her tampons clogging the sewer pipes? And this was her first book? People paid her money to write note based on this?
This book made me laugh and want more! kudos to Laurie Notaro on nailing the insecurities of women everywhere! I couldn't stop giggling, even when I wasn't reading the book! Such a fun read! To give you an idea how much I liked it, I was halfway through it when I lost my . I couldn't wait for the new to get here, so I continued reading it on my computer.
Laurie Notaro's books are chick lit for chubby girls with tattoos, and (according to my own) their Phyllis Diller-loving mothers. She had me chuckling aloud all day long at the beach. AOFB is one of her strongest collections of her perfectly witty tales of everyday things (like taking down the Christmas tree in March, taking her cat to the dentist, babysitting and shopping with her nephew, using her husband's toothbrush to scrape cat crap off her shoe, dealing with her crazed mother) told in a priceless and hilarious style. In this book, she concentrates on meeting, marrying, and living with her husband. A terrific, hysterical, can't-put-it-down, and all-too-realistic book. Grade A+
This was a good book. Not great...but good.

Good because the first half of the book was raw, real and witty. You could tell she put alot of effort into the writing leading up to the wedding and the wedding itself. Her self deprecation and pointed observation of the lunacy that surrounds couples and weddings in general made me laugh out loud.

Not great because after the wedding...the book sort of dies. Yes there are some laugh out loud funny moments...but not nearly as many as the first half. It's like she became tired and decided to "phone in" the last part of the book, from recycled columns or essays previously written. She could have juiced them up just a bit more and this would have been a "Great" book.

Three Stars Out Of Five.
Started out amazing! In love with the awkward and seemingly unjust situations. Then it seemed as if everything was a level of self absorbed terrible that only suburban teens with iPhones understand. Then I realized it seems to be more of a collection of essays then a real novel. Not terrible but a little after half way through I have lost interest in what I initially drank in. Not a bad writer, just seemed like she wanted to publish a book about herself before thinking of how to line it up.
