Jane-Emily

Louisa Amory wasn't thrilled about watching her niece, 12-year-old Jane, all summer at Jane's grandmother's house, but she intended to make the best of it. However, Jane quickly becomes obsessed with Emily, her aunt who had died in the house at age 12. There are plenty of people around who remember Emily, including her mother (Jane's grandmother) and Dr. Adam Frost, the new, young doctor who as a child had promised to marry Emily. And they all remember that Emily was a spoiled, selfish little girl who could be quite hateful when crossed. Jane even starts acting like Emily at times and talking about her as if she still lives there.

This was a fun read, although I would classify it more as an upper elementary/intermediate read than young adult. It is a ghost story very reminiscent of the ones I loved to read at that age. It is told from the perspective of Louisa and has a very innocent element of romance. It also has suspense that might be too much for some children.

Witches' Children

This book is about the Salem witch trials, told from the perspective of one of the accusers. Like the other young girls in Salem, Mary Warren was looking for anything to dispel the monotony of her life as a bond servant to the Proctor family. When the other girls began seeing visions of the devil and experiencing screaming fits, Mary fancied that she saw and experienced the same things. Influenced by the fortune telling slave Tituba, the girls spoke of witchcraft. Pressured by the authorities to name names, they began to do so. Although she never meant anyone any harm, Mary found herself unable to escape the web that she and the others had woven around themselves and Salem Village.

I thought this book was darker than Jane-Emily and more suited to a young adult audience, probably because the events it described really happened. It's not graphic, but it does talk about hanging and what someone might look like during one.

Overall, both are good books that I look forward to sharing with my daughter one day. Parents should be sure that a child can handle the subject matter and suspense before giving it to them, however.

Yet another book from my childhood that I found on ! A slightly supernatural story, this does hold one's interest. I think I was around 11 or 12 when I read it the first time. Worth reading it again, all these years later!
This was a great book. I searched everywhere for a copy of this book. I kept finding it on ebay, but for a price I couldn't pay. I read this many years ago as a teen and loved it so much I read it many, many times until the book literally fell apart and I ended up losing pages. I have enjoyed Jane-Emily very much. It is a paranormal book involving the spirit of a long dead child. Great read!!!!
I read this book when I was a little girl. The name always stuck with me, and I named my daughter Emily. I wanted a copy to give her so she would know where her name came from.
This is a good Supernatural story keep you on the edge of your seat you won't be able to put the book down
This is one of the most memorable books from my childhood! It scared the crap out of me and yet I couldn't put it down!
I first read Jane-Emily when I was a pre-teen in the Seventies. It's still a great book. The mood throughout the book is eerie and the tension builds to a completely thrilling and satisfying ending I had never read Witches Children before and I really enjoyed that too. It gave an insider's view of the Salem Witch trials.
The first time I heard about this author or novel was when perusing Lizzie Skurnick's Shelf Discovery, which, if you haven't picked up yet, is a wonderful little gem of a book featuring teen classics from decades past. Many of you guys have joined the Shelf Discovery Challenge as well.

Anywho, I happened upon Jane-Emily and was at once drawn in with the synopsis of the story. I love ghost stories and anything with a Gothic feel. I couldn't find this one at any library nearby, so I ordered it and am so glad I did. This is a classic creepy, psychological ghost story with a side of romance for good measure. Something about children who are evil, possessed ghosts always seems extra malevolent, don't you think? Oh, and you will never look at those silver reflecting balls in peoples' front yards the same way again...

~For fans of Poe, Shirley Jackson, Du Maurier, all that good stuff. This book might also be a good way to get your kids to be fans of the aforementioned )
