Taking place in New York City in the late 19th century, these Gaslight Mysteries chronicle the investigatory adventures of a former socialite turned midwife, Sarah Brandt , and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy of the New York City Police Department. Set against the backdrop of New York City life that encompasses the teeming tournaments of the poor and the stately homes of the wealthy, these books are a pleasure to read.

Although the plots are quite intriguing, it is the burgeoning relationship between Sarah and Malloy that grips the reader, as well as their lives and the lives of the supporting cast of characters the pepper the series. Once again, Sarah finds herself working closely with Malloy, when Catherine, an abandoned child whom she has taken into her home, becomes the focal point of a surprising inquiry by someone claiming to be Catherine's former nursemaid, acting on behalf of Catherine's mother.

Unnerved by the inquiry, Sarah inveigles Detectives Frank Malloy to discover what he can about the nursemaid and her story, as she is loathe to hand Catherine over to someone who is a stranger to her without knowing more. Unfortunately, he is too late, as he soon discovers that the nursemaid appears to have been murdered in her Chelsea tenement flat.

Curious, Sarah joins Frank in unraveling the mystery of the nursemaid's murder and the questions that surround her beloved Catherine. This leads to a series of surprising encounters and yet more murders, as the plot unfolds with a surprise in store for both Sarah and Frank, one that will facilitate something that has been a long time in coming.

These Gaslight Mysteries are entertaining, and the characters are well-developed. The combination of history and mystery with a touch of romance is irresistible. With each book, the backdrop stories of the main characters are further fleshed out. While the mysteries are intriguing, they are but the framework around which the characters evolve. Those who enjoy historical fiction and mysteries will enjoy this series of books.

Murder in Chelsea A Gaslight Mystery Victoria Thompson 9780425260418 Books Reviews

Let's face it. This series is more than the mystery. It is about Sarah and Malloy. From the first book I have been patiently waiting for Sarah and Malloy's relationship to blossom into something more. Yes their differences seemed insurmountable but I knew it was possible. And as others have stated, they have finally come to a new point in their relationship. A very surprising resolve to their relationship, I might add. But really, this isn't what this book is about. And that was disappointing. I would have liked a little more - more glances, more looks, maybe a stolen kiss. Something that said that they were longing for each other. Malloy is a very honorable man. Love that. But still a little more hints that he suffers in love. But this book is about the mystery. A very entertaining mystery I might add. It wasn't robust. I could see the ending before I got to the big reveal but it was filled with twists and turns that kept it interesting and engaging. If you are fan of this series I would say this is a must read. I am hoping the author puts a little more romance in the next book.
In this volume, Midwife Sarah Brandt has found out that her foster daughter, Catherine's mother has returned and is wanting her child back.

Naturally, Sarah turns to her friend (and hopefully more,) Det. Sgt. Frank Molloy to help her keep Catherine. When the nursemaid who had given up Catherine to the 'mission house,' turns up and then is found stabbed to death, the urgency of keeping Catherine's location and foster family's name hidden increases.

This tale involves murder, hidden identities, greed, mortality, and more. It is a tale that keeps you turning the pages as you hold your breath over Catherine's safety and future.

The ending is a whopper. The Author's note should be read at the ending , rather than my 'peeking' at the beginning. Be good and read it properly. I can hardly wait to read the next volume.
To me this book is a continuation of the story stemming from Murder on Fifth Avenue. Remember that Mrs. Decker told Sarah that her father was testing Frank? The testing continues. One can only imagine the sense of pending loss as Sarah finds that her foster daughter has a life before she came to Sarah. There was always this undercurrent in the previous stories and now it comes to full light. I have to admit I was surprised by the composition of Catherine`s family. Sarah`s parents also seem to grow in stature as the story developes. Sarah holds her own as she see`s her personal family life starts to undergo new stresses and strains. Mrs. Malloy manages to put her antipathy towards Sarah to one side as she also becomes interested in Catherine`s story.

I was anticipating Felix Decker either arranging a transfer or a promotion which could have lead to the same thing. Thompson`s deft handling of the final few scenes now sets up more questions from me - mainly, "Now what happens to Frank?" Does he stay with the Police or does he move on to something else - private detective? Staying in his present station clearly has a potential for problems for Frank, especially since his patron Theodore Roosevelt is now busy in Washington getting the Navy ready to earn it`s pay. In a couple of years TR is back in New York, stil a little smoke stained from battle but ready to be the State - is there a role for Frank in Albany? I see this story as a potential spring board for both Sarah and Frank - now that Frank`s life seems to be taking off, can Sarah keep up? I`m sure she will but it won`t be easy as Frank makes new adjustments to his life - remember he has a son as well that he still must take care of, not to mention Mrs. Malloy. I think the stories from now on will be more complex than they have been to date -@which certainly keeps the interest level at high boil.
